Whether you’re a proud cat person, or a die-hard dog lover, or still undecided, there’s no denying the profound impact a furry friend can have on your life. Beyond the cuddles and companionship, owning a pet, commonly a dog or a cat, can improve your overall quality of life in ways you might not expect.
Most pet owners would agree that their mental health benefits from owning an animal. In return for meeting their basic necessities, pets give you unconditional love and companionship. Pets help reduce stress and anxiety by providing a comforting presence in your home. Caring for pets give owners a sense of purpose and even a relationship that is different from those with other people. The comfort and love provided by a pet could be helpful when working through mental challenges and processing of traumatic events.
Believe it or not, owning a pet can improve and promote your physical health as well. Pet owners tend to get more exercise than people who do not own pets. Taking your dog on a walk, running around the house letting your cat chase you, playing fetch, and other pet-friendly games allow pet owners to exercise and contribute to their cardiovascular health. On top of that, according to UC Davis Health, the presence of animals significantly improves blood pressure because of reduced stress levels. People who own pets often have lower resting blood pressure compared to those without pets.
Pets become part of the family. If you are a parent who is open minded to adding a pet to your family, but you need the right reason to make it happen, consider how a pet might provide your children with some more responsibility. Your children will learn how to care for an animal while also benefitting from these mental and physical health effects.
