About the Book

This book is about two siblings Dexter and Leah. At times they do not get along and can be mean and other times they can be nice. The two are very kind though to others. This story talks about the power of kindness. Their neighbor Ms. Marvis lives alone and one day when they went to get eggs from her house they both noticed how empty and quiet her house is. They found out that Ms. Marvis’s family does not come around, so when they asked their parents if they can invite her over. They both thought it was a very good idea. At dinner Ms. Marvis came and told stories all night and talked about the jelly donuts she makes. After dinner Ms. Marvis thanked them and said that it was very a special night and she loved the experience of being around families again. She also loved that they made the donuts together since she had not made them in years. The next day, Leah and Dexter’s parents received the recipe for the jelly donuts from Ms. Marvis. That day they made them and brought some over to Ms. Marvis and made a snowman family in front of her house. A few days later they received a letter from Ms. Marvis thanking them for the jelly donuts they had made and all the acts of kindness they have been showing her, it made her feel extra special. After reading the letter Leah and Dexter were very thankful for each other and were glad they were able to work together and do such a great act of kindness.

Relation to Todays world

Showing acts of kindness is one of the best things to do, as well as receiving them. It can turn someone’s whole day around. As kids being kind to others and doing little acts of kindness to those around you can make you feel better and grow, especially if you are doing the acts of kindness with a sibling like in the book. Today’s world is full of stressful situations starting with COVID, we do not know what is going to happen and for parents not knowing if your kids are going to be in school is making it even harder. Being able to teach kids that just the littlest act of kindness can change someone’s day builds trust in the parent child relationship. Children are so smart, they know when someone is feeling down and want to help in any way possible. This book shows a great example on how children can be kind to others around them. It also can teach kids the value of being kind to those around you.
