Get Outside!

We did it! We survived the dreadful days of winter and are nearing the end of the unpredictable midwestern spring. It is almost summer! The clouds are parting, and the sun is shining bright. Nature is inviting us to step outside, soak in the sunshine, and reconnect with the world around us. Instead of rushing through packed schedules or overwhelming to-do lists, try using this upcoming season as an opportunity to practice mindfulness outdoors!

Mindfulness, which is the practice of being fully present in the moment, can transform simple outdoor activities into powerful tools for boosting mental health. Whether you have five minutes or a free afternoon, here are mindful outdoor activities you can try to recharge your mind, body, and spirit this summer.

  1. Take a mindful walk in nature. Find a nearby nature trail or even just step out into your backyard. Walk slowly and pay attention to each step. Notice how your feet feel against the ground. Take in the colors, sounds, and smells around you. Resist the temptation to rush or let your mind wander. Be in the present moment!
  2. Try garden therapy. Whether it is a few balcony pots or a garden bed of fresh produce, tending to plants encourages patience, responsibility, and appreciation for steady growth. These are valuable reminders for personal mental health journeys.
  3. Try mindful stargazing. If you’re not a morning person, go find a quiet spot at night away from city lights. Spread out a blanket, lay down, look up, and simply observe. Breathe deeply and allow yourself to feel connected to something bigger than yourself.
