This is a huge debate within the field of psychology. It is essentially genetics versus nurture. To better figure this out let us define each. Nature refers to our DNA and what qualities and traits we receive by just being born. Nurture refers to how our experience shapes us. Charles Darwin tilted more to the belief of nature; however, there have been many studies which now tell us that it is usually an interaction of both. Some studies have been done using twins who are identical and were separated at birth. After growing apart, the people were analyzed and took tests to see if nature or nurture had a bigger effect on their lives. Some findings included: scoring similar on tests to their biological parents, significant portion of traits like personality, intelligence, and behavior as similar. These all show how genetics or nature does have a big role. On the other hand, this relationship is not as simple as it seems. When people are raised in higher income families they tend to score higher on tests. Also, if neglected children can develop slower and even have lifelong issues with learning and relationships.
Since many mental health conditions are genetic it is important to realize if you may be predisposed to these conditions. Also, nature is important because things such as traumatic events, stress, neglect, abuse, or violence can negatively affect your mental health.
