What is music therapy? Music therapy is defined as the “use of music or elements of music to accomplish goals, like reducing stress or improving quality of life”. It can include singing, playing instruments, writing, listening, and interpreting lyrics. Music therapy does not require the client to have musical skills or talent as sessions are tailored and designed to fit the client’s needs. There are two general types of music therapy: Active interventions and Receptive interventions. Active interventions allow the client to be an active agent in creating music with their therapist. Receptive intervention allows the client to listen to music and interpret it.
Studies have shown that music helps with mood regulation, stress, and relaxation. It allows people to express their feelings, thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a way they may not know how to verbally. Music can create a safe space for self-reflection and create feelings of being understood. Music therapy provides an inclusive space where healing is encouraged and can decrease anxiety and depressive symptoms as well as improve functioning. Creating music by playing instruments, singing, or songwriting can help with emotional release, increase self-esteem, and allow for an integration of community. It also can improve cognitive functioning and reduce the stigma of mental disorders.
The kind of music you listen to has an effect on your mood and how you feel throughout the day. I struggle with depression and I noticed that if a majority of the music that I listened to every day was sad and depressing, it would not make me feel better and ended up making my depression worse. It gave me an excuse to sit in my depression and not get better. However, when I started listening to more upbeat and positive music, I noticed that my depression did get better as it allowed me to focus on the positive things in life and dance around my living room like nobody was watching. It truly lifted me up, reduced my stress, and allowed me to feel free!
