Cultivating Compassion: Why it Matters More than Ever

What is compassion? Compassion is the awareness of another person’s suffering with a desire to help. Unlike empathy, which involves understanding and sharing someone’s feelings, compassion also includes the motivation to take action. As Hill (2023) writes “Compassion is like water, it can flow over hard rocks and into tight places and softens them over time. According to Dr. Paul Gilbert, compassion has three key components: giving compassion, which involves offering care and support to other; receiving compassion, which means being open to help from others; and self-compassion, which is the ability to be kind to ourselves, especially during times when we are self-critical or when things do not go as planned.

Compassion is important because humans have a natural need to connect with others (Hill, 2023). Giving and receiving compassion brings a sense of joy and purpose, and it helps us navigate life’s challenges while supporting those around us. According to Hill (2023), compassion not only gives us a sense of meaning but also encourages us to move beyond self-focus. It strengthens communities and empowers us to stand up against injustice. When we witness someone being harmed, it is compassion that motivates us to take action and protect them.

Compassion can also help us move on from negative relationships by encouraging mindfulness of our own well-being and strengthening our sense of self-worth. It supports mental health by reminding us that we are not alone, which can foster hope and reduce feelings of loneliness. According to Hill (2023), compassoin can help us break away from rumination and anxiety by reminding us to be kind to ourselves when we make mistakes and encourages us to move forward.

Compassion is more than a warm feeling; it is a powerful and transformative force that benefits our minds and bodies. It can empower communities, strengthen relationships, and foster change. Through both small and big acts of compassion for others and ourselves, we tap into a force that has the power to change the world.
