How do I find the right therapist or counselor? This is a question that I have asked myself many times when trying to find the right therapist/counselor that fits my needs. It can be difficult to know when the therapist/counselor fits your needs and how exactly do you know if it will be the right fit. I have found that trusting my gut is a huge indicator of if this will work out or not. When going into therapy sessions with new counselors, if I felt that I did not feel comfortable or have a good connection then I knew that it was not the right fit for me.
When looking for a new therapist/counselor, it is important to ask yourself these questions after the session:
- Does the therapist have knowledge of what I am bringing to the session?
- Does it seem like the therapist truly cares about my problems?
- Does the therapist accept me for who I am?
- Would I feel comfortable revealing personal information to this person? Do I feel comfortable with this person?
- Is the therapist a good listener? Does he or she pick up on my feelings and what I am saying?
While this process can sometimes take quite a while to find the right therapist/counselor for you, it is important to remember the reason you are searching for someone. It can be easy to forget why you are searching when the process to find someone becomes frustrating. Remember when you become frustrated, remind yourself why you are doing this and how important it is to seek help.
