Left on Read: Understanding Ghosting

Have you ever found yourself replaying conversations, wondering what went wrong, only to be met with silence? In today’s world of constant connection, it can feel especially confusing when someone suddenly disappears without explanation. This experience, often referred to as “ghosting,” can leave us searching for answers that never come.

Ghosting is more than just a modern dating trend; it is often rooted in avoidance and evasion. For many, ending a relationship or conversation directly can feel uncomfortable or anxiety-provoking. Rather than facing that discomfort, some choose to withdraw entirely. While this may alleviate short-term stress for the person being ghosted, it can create significant emotional distress for the person on the receiving end.

The impact of ghosting is often tied to the lack of closure. As humans, we are wired to seek understanding and meaning in our relationships. When there is no explanation, our minds tend to fill in the gaps, sometimes leading to self-doubt, overthinking, or feelings of rejection. For individuals with past experiences of abandonment or insecure attachment, ghosting can feel especially painful.

It is important to recognize that being ghosted is not a reflection of your worth. More often, it reflects the other person’s difficulty with communication, emotional regulation, or conflict. While it can be tempting to search for answers, healing often comes from accepting what is out of our control and redirecting our focus inward.

Moving forward, we can also reflect on how we show up in our own relationships. Practicing clear and respectful communication even when it feels uncomfortable can help foster healthier connections. Choosing honesty over avoidance not only supports others but also aligns with our own emotional growth.

Ghosting may leave us with silence, but within that silence is an opportunity to build self-awareness, strengthen resilience, and choose a more intentional and clearer way of connecting with others.
