Have you ever experienced a strong feeling about something—whether it was a job offer, a relationship, or life decision—without being able to explain why? It’s like your stomach kind of drops and there’s a voice inside your head telling you, “Beware!” or “Go for it!”. That feeling is called your intuition. Although it might not seem like you have any reasoning behind this hunch, there is evidence to believe that you intuition is actually your subconscious mind at work, helping you make decisions that will keep you safe and maximize your potential based on past experiences and patterns.
Unfortunately, though, your intuition is not always the most trustworthy source. Although it tries to lead you in the right direction based off your prior experiences and learned knowledge, your subconscious also uses biases and presuppositions to give you that ‘gut feeling’. These might be biases that you believe and are not aware of, and following them can ultimately strain your relationships, make you miss out on eventful or educational opportunities, or put you in situations you should be avoiding.
Although it is important to know how to respond to your personal boundaries between comfortable and uncomfortable situations, constantly following your intuition can actually be mistaken for anxiety. If you wish to learn more about how to distinguish the characteristics of your intuition, book an appointment with us at Olive Branch Counseling Associations, Inc!
