Reaching out for help, attending therapy, and being vulnerable about your struggles can be scary and intimidating for many. You are not alone if this is how you feel. Perhaps you are having a difficult time coming to terms with the fact that you need help. Or maybe you’ve never felt comfortable sharing your thoughts, feelings, and insecurities with another human being. Well, I’m writing this blog to tell you that there is nothing to be afraid, ashamed, or intimidated of when it comes to seeking professional help!
First, needing help to get through a troubling time in your life or to deal with difficult thoughts and emotions does not mean you are weak. In fact, taking the step to get help shows strength and that you want to prioritize self-improvement and your wellbeing. Life is not easy, and you only get to live once. Therefore, it is important to do whatever is necessary to support yourself through life’s obstacles and enjoy your life to the fullest.
Second, good therapists are not going to be judgmental of your life experiences and thoughts. They, of all people, understand that everyone is different. Everyone has distinct perceptions, reactions, and walks of life. It is the job of the therapist to help you cope through your individual struggles. Remember, therapists are people too, who have their own lives and hoops to jump through. They are not going to judge your life when they, themselves have their own problems. They just want to help and be there for you.
Lastly, it is important to know that therapy is available for anyone and everyone! Those of all backgrounds, cultures, genders, and ages would benefit from attending therapy if they are struggling with something. Whether it takes two, twenty, or more sessions, your therapy experience will be personal to supporting your growth through life’s difficult moments.
