Is water important for mental health?

Water is an important drink in everyday life. There are many reasons why for your physical health, what bout for your mental health? Drinking water means staying hydrated and not just chugging a lot of water every once in a while.

The brain needs water to function, and if it does not receive enough some cognitive abilities, like memory, may be impaired. It may also be harder to think remember, and there may be more brain fog. In turn, this means that when a person is hydrated they can have better memory and judgement. Another effect of being hydrated is a boosted serotonin production. “Without water, the brain can’t get enough of the amino acid tryptophan needed to create serotonin, also known as the “feel good” chemical. When serotonin is created it naturally boosts one’s mood. In order to ensure that someone has enough serotonin in the brain one must stay hydrated. A third effect of being hydrated is decreased symptoms of anxiety and depression. “Studies have found that people who regularly drink less water have an increased risk of developing depression and anxiety.” This connects to serotonin levels, when serotonin is at a healthy level, than there are a decreased number of depression symptoms. When dehydrated, the body is stressed and releases excess cortisol.

Some tips to stay hydrated are to carry a water bottle around with you, try flavor packets if water is too boring, and listen to your body!
