Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is most commonly diagnosed in young children and is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in children. While it is usually diagnosed in childhood, it can still be diagnosed in adulthood. The most common symptoms people notice in children with ADHD are difficulty focusing and being over-energized. However, just because a child is having a hard time focusing or has a lot of energy does not guarantee that they have ADHD. Let’s take a look at some of the other symptoms.
It is important to do research to understand ADHD rather than basing it on stereotypes. ADHD shows up quite differently in different genders and in adulthood. It is quite common for a child to have a lot of energy and to have trouble focusing, however, if a child does not grow out of those behaviors, that could be an indication of ADHD. Some other symptoms of ADHD in children include: daydreaming, forgetting things often, trouble being patient, trouble controlling impulsivity, and constant fidgeting or restlessness. Figuring out how to get help for your child can be stressful. However, getting a medical exam done to rule out any medical issues with similar symptoms is important. The next step would be finding a therapist or psychiatrist to provide assessments and analyze your child. This will help you get your answer on whether your child may have ADHD or not.
If your child gets a diagnosis of ADHD, finding treatment would be the next step. CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) is a common and useful therapy treatment for ADHD. The therapist and caregiver(s) can work together to figure out how to best help the child. Next, medication can be useful as well and is also a very common form of treatment for ADHD. However, it is recommended that you try therapy before going on medication, and then combine therapy with medication.
