Adapting to Seasonal Changes

Winter is a beautiful season that brings with it chilly weather and cozy moments by the fireplace. However, it is essential for parents to ensure that their little ones are warm and comfortable during this time. Since I work with children, I often get asked by parents for resources regarding staying warm and preventing sickness during this season. I get it, I do not like to bundle up myself because it can feel overwhelming, but it does benefit us to take precaution. In this blog, we will explore practical ways parents can help their children stay warm and cozy throughout the winter season.

1. Dressing in Layers:

Encourage your kids to dress in layers, as this is one of the most effective ways to stay warm. Layering provides insulation and allows them to adjust their clothing according to their comfort level. Start with a breathable base layer, such as thermal underwear or long-sleeved shirts, followed by a warm and insulating mid-layer, like a sweater or fleece. Finally, top it off with a waterproof and wind-resistant outer layer to protect against snow or even wind. Don’t forget about the importance of accessories in keeping your child warm. Hats, scarves, and gloves are essential for protecting exposed areas like the head, neck, and hands. Opt for materials like wool or fleece, as they are excellent at retaining heat. If needed, show your child pictures of children wearing winter accessories for them to feel comfortable doing the same. Personally, I always loved it when my parents told me to wear a hat in the winter because they also put one on. In other words, be the example of what you want your child to start doing. Additionally, ensure their feet stay warm with thick socks and insulated boots to prevent frostbite and discomfort.

2. Keep the Home Warm:

Maintaining a cozy and warm home environment is crucial during winter. Set the thermostat to a comfortable temperature, ensuring it’s not too hot or too cold. Use draft stoppers to seal any gaps under doors and windows, preventing cold air from creeping in. Consider using space heaters or blankets in specific areas, like your child’s bedroom, for extra warmth during the night. Due to heaters often being turned on in this season, staying hydrated is just as important during winter as it is in the summer months. Encourage your child to drink warm beverages like hot cocoa, herbal tea, or warm milk. Not only will this keep them hydrated, but it will also provide a cozy and comforting feeling from the inside out.

3. Engage in Indoor Activities:

While it’s important to venture outside and enjoy the crisp winter air, there will be days when it’s simply too cold to play outdoors for extended periods. Transitioning to indoor activities could be challenging as your child will have to begin to adjust to the changes that come along with the season. Therefore, engage your child in fun indoor activities to keep them entertained and active. For example, you can build forts with blankets, have a family movie night with popcorn, or encourage them to explore their creative side with arts and crafts projects. Many times, spending time playing with your children inside is just as fun as playing outside. By keeping them engaged, you’ll distract from the cold outside and create lasting memories.

After all, adjusting to a new season is often not as exciting unless your child loves winter. Although there are plenty of changes that need to occur both physically and environmentally, such as slippery and snowy streets, both concepts could be turned to wonderful experiences for your child. Therefore, do not be discouraged if you have a hard time bundling your child up or finding fun things to do at home, because most likely, you are not the only one. Learn to start with what your child already likes and spends most of their time playing with and go from there. Doing so will promote great playing opportunities and establish a better relationship between parents and children.
