What is Premarital counseling?
Everyone dreams of having a happy marriage, we spend hours planning a wedding, looking for the perfect attire, and making sure everything is good to go for the big day. Yet, we don’t consider how different or difficult it could be to transition from single to a married life. Premarital counseling is a type of therapy that helps couples prepare for marriage. This form of counseling can help identify weaknesses that could become problems in the long run.
Why is Premarital counseling important?
Premarital counseling can help couples improve the relationship as the following topics related to marriage will be discussed:
- Decision making
- Roles in marriage
- Beliefs and values
- Communication
- Finances
We have to remember that we are bringing in our own values, history and expectations into the relationship, while our partner is doing the same, which results in differences. Once the above topics are discussed, it helps the couple improve their ability to communicate and set up realistic expectations. According to the American Psychological Association, marital education programs such as premarital counseling have helped prevent a future divorce.
