Fair trade features: caffeination station

How do you start your day? For me, mornings are not complete without a cup of coffee. How I take that coffee depends on the day. Sometimes I’ll drink it black. Other times, something sweet and creamy sounds much more satisfying (especially in the sub-zero temps or freezing rain we’ve been having here in Chicago recently–give me alllll the cozy drinks). But what if I told you that your morning cup o’ joe could make you feel great in more ways than just delivering your daily dose of caffeine? How is this possible? By choosing to fill your cup with ethically-sourced coffee from Fair Trade companies. What’s already part of your daily routine could actually make a huge social impact, and it literally takes minutes! How much more cozy is the dark rich flavor and delicious warmth of that morning coffee, when you can also snuggle up with a peace of mind? You can rest assured that no harm has been done in the process of getting that coffee from the field into your favorite mug.

In the name of maximizing coziness, I thought it would be appropriate to share with you all a recipe for a just-sweet-enough latte that’s full of warming spices, a few optional health-boosting superfoods, and (of course) a kick of caffeine.

Regarding the optional add-ins: Maca powder is considered a superfood because of its high number of natural vitamins, and is thought to increase energy levels, benefit skin health, and improve mood. Mental health win! Collagen powder is new to the health food scene, but has quickly risen in popularity. It’s essentially a powder made of hydrolyzed collagen proteins taken from animals. Many believe that it can help improve digestion by reinforcing the lining of the gut; strengthen joints; and contribute to healthier hair, skin, and nails. If you’re unsure about either of these ingredients, I’d recommend doing some research before using them. It’s always good to stay educated. Anyway, without further ado:

The Winter Wellness Latte

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. strong brewed coffee
  • 1 c. milk (cow’s milk, almond, coconut… your choice!)
  • 1/4 tsp. ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 2 tsp. natural sweetener (I like to use honey or pure maple syrup, but Stevia, agave, or raw sugar work too)
  • 1 Tb. collagen powder and/or 1 Tb. maca powder

Method

  1. Brew coffee according to package directions.
  2. Combine hot coffee with the rest of the ingredients and blend, either in a blender or in a bowl using an immersion blender, until frothy.
  3. Pour into a mug and enjoy!

This recipe can be made with any coffee, but it’s definitely worth it to consider supporting one of these Fair Trade, US-based companies that you can shop for online or in stores.
