Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. The proof of the upcoming holiday began popping up just after New Year’s. Any store you go to has Valentine’s Day themed everything. It’s as if Cupid shot his arrow of love at the entire retail community! While February 14th is a time to celebrate relationships, it can also be a time to reflect on yours. Is the relationship you are currently in healthy? Do the two of you communicate well, respect one another, spend quality time together, and enhance one another’s lives? It is important to observe if you are getting your needs met, and if not begin, to advocate for yourself. Are you currently single? Now is a wonderful time to review your relationship with you. Being in a healthy relationship with yourself is the beginning of a great foundation upon building self-awareness of how you would like your future partner (if you choose one down the road) to treat you. One of the greatest loves you can ever experience is the love from self. Here is where you will find self-acceptance, self-esteem, self-worth, and self-respect. Once you set the precedent of how you long to be treated by yourself, you will know how you would like to be treated by another. Another advantage of this is the ability to treat others well. How I feel about myself can transfer onto how I treat my loved ones. Not only does the relationship with oneself impact the individual, but it also enhances interpersonal relationships. So, on this Valentine’s Day, enjoy the festivities with your special someone. If single, cherish the relationship you have with yourself. Love is valuable, especially when it comes from yourself.
